Chapter 23

It was a beautiful room.

Panoramic glass windows, tinted slightly blue. Black marble floors. And a large oak table in the middle of the room, freshly polished.

There were ten of us in total. I was the only who wasn’t an American. We went through the motions. Obligatory handshakes. Etc. Then we sat and started talking.

This wasn’t a serious matter. We weren’t discussing issues that would impact the world. This was more of a meet and greet sort of thing. A tradition New York’s politicians had to welcome the new mayor of London.

After that, we would go to another room and have a photo-op. Mostly stilted stuff. Shaking hands again while smiling like idiots. Etc.

A necessary part of my job. Definitely not my favorite part of it, though. I loved meeting real people. I loved talking to them and listening to what ideas they had for the future of London. That was what being mayor was all about. Not this PR nonsense.

Oh well. At least the trip allowed me to come to New York for the first time. What a gorgeous city. And I would be back. Probably just once or twice a year, but something was better than nothing.

And if I hadn’t come there, I would have never met Nicole.

Damn. Nicole.

Why did I even think of her again? I was doing my best to block her out. It’s not like I would forget about her so soon, but I didn’t want to be visualizing her. I didn’t even want to be saying her name inside of my head.

I released a quick sigh and refocused on what was happening around me.

Someone made a joke. I missed it, but I smiled as everyone around me laughed. I doubted it was at my expense. These politicians knew to avoid potentially offending a foreign leader.

I took in the room again. There were so many men there. Just two women. And they were both assistants.

“You guys need more female politicians,” I said bluntly. The room went quiet. I fought the urge to smile at how I had shaken things up.

Now as to how they would react.

The governor of New York folded his hands in front of him. In a grave tone, he began to speak. “We know. We’re working on it. Politics have always been a man’s game, but things are changing.”

“Good,” I replied, looking right at him. The intensity of my gaze made him turn away after a few seconds. The other politicians in the room nodded their agreement. The two female assistants were smiling as they stood to the side. I had made their day.

And I meant what I said.

Nicole would have approved if she were there.

Oh, fuck!

Here we go again.

Nicole.

Why did I keep thinking about her? She was done. She was gone. Out of my life. I thought I would never see her again. I had a lot of sex the previous night, but if I wanted female companionship again so soon, New York had no shortage of beautiful women. There were many models in the city, as well.
